The Royals, who are now 1.001 to be promoted and 1.00 to win the title, have now won 14 of their last 16 league games to storm to the top of the Championship table.
Following a superb victory over their nearest rivals, a delighted McDermott said: "Apart from the first six games of the season, we would be winning this league by a long way.
"We had a tough summer as everybody knows and I keep banging on about it, but that is what happened.
"We lost the play-off final, we lost players, we had to replace them and we had to find another way and we've done that."
The Royals won just one of their opening six league games this season, but they have lost only a further six games since as they have worked their way up the table.
Reading dropped back into the Championship in May 2008 after their first-ever two seasons in the top-flight, while last season they were beaten 4-2 in the play-off final by Swansea City.
Despite the home defeat, the Saints are 1213.00 to join McDermott's men in the top-flight next season, with West Ham 1.50 to secure promotion.
