Federer was pleased with his display, and the four-time Australian Open champion admits he had to be at his best to see off Tomic.
He said: "I thought I played a really good match.
"I knew I had to. Anything else wouldn't have done the job."
Federer is priced at 1.28 to see off Del Potro, while the Argentine can be backed at 3.90 to see off the 30-year-old and derail the Swiss' bid for a 17th Grand Slam title.
